A proportion is an equation that shows two equal ratios.

Proportions work just like equivalent fractions.
To check for equivalence you cross multiply!
To find a missing value in a proportion, use the “Stoney Method
Cross multiply what you can and divide by the remaining number.

n/4 = 40/32
n = 4 * 40 ÷ 32
n = 160 ÷ 32
n = 5
